Cant seem to find IUSR_MachineName in users using SQLEXPRESS 2005

Hello,

I have an ASP web app with an SQL back end. I am currently migrating to a
new Windows 2003 Server machine and SQL Server 2005 Express. When I import
the old database, I'm trying to grant the IUSR_MachineName account access to
the database, but I can't seem to find that user account. I'm clicking new
users, and when I type this user in, SQL doesn't recognize it, and when I
click "Browse" all I see is BUILTIN/Administrators, BUILTIN/Users NT
Authority/System SA (which is not in use) and a long name that includes a
lot of dollar signs, the machine name and SQL express in it (it's a big
cryptic looking thing). Any idea how I get this to work again?

Thanks!"Rico" <r c o l l e n s @. h e m m i n g w a y . c o mREMOVE THIS PART IN

I can't find that account either, unless...

On one Server 2003, I do not have IIS6 installed/activated (I have not yet
indentified any roles this server will have). On another Server 2003, I do.
In Computer Management control panel, Local Users and Groups, Users, I see
IUSR_<machinename>.

On the third hand, this built-in name will not show when searching for
objects when adding names to the Security tab of Folder Properties, nor, I
would imagine, any other place where you can pick names of Users or Groups.

I think it's just a name you have to know about.

Now, SQL Server 2005 Express - I just finished installing that. What a
fracking nightmare!

Smither Consulting|||ARGH! Thanks Brian,

I managed to fight through that (was my inexperience with SQL 2005,
(defining the Logins before defining the Users).

Now I'm faced with a different issue. I finally got my ASP.Net app working
using an ADO interface to SQL Server 2005 to create a crystal report,
exporting to a pdf file (phew!). I was screaming for joy when I finally got
this all working. I began testing, starting with the first report, it ran
for a long time and didn't produce anything. I went back to the first
report I ran, and it ran a long time and didn't produce anything. I opened
up management studio, and IT wouldn't even connect! I got a "Cannot
generate SSPI context" error, out of the blue, after it was already working.
nothing had changed in the meantime, I'm always careful about that.

Anyway, if you have any idea what might have occured, please let me know. I
hope this is not indicative of an unreliable database system.

cant see server

Hi,
Twice this has happened....
WinXP Pro SP2. SQL server 2000
When I have used a third party app (.net tool) to select my sql box from the
"available list" it pauses for a while and the drop down list is empty.
I manually type the name of the server in and it goes ahead just fine.
The same happened when I just tried to create a DSN via the MS Access upsize
wizard.

Why can't 3rd parties see the server instance?

JayIf your are using TCP. Sounds like WINS is working but something is
blocking UDP port 1434.

Could be a router, firewall, XP SP2's built in firewall blocks this...

More info...

Looked at network config and it says that named pipes and tcp are the
enabled protocols.
I don't use the XP SP2 firewall. I use Kerio.
I've checked the kerio app settings and SQL is set to "ask" as opposed to
permit or deny (so I'd expect a Kerio dialogue if anything was trying?)
The server installation (in EM) is listed simply as (local).

New DSN and the server drop down box is empty but, get this!, if I type in a
period "." and click next it goes ahead no problem and the connection tests
ok!

can't retrieve data using app

Hi,
I have an application that can only sometimes retrieve data via the
application for a certain process. This option has been working correctly for
a few years and no changes have been made to it. I ran a DBCC INDEXDEFRAG
against the tables in question a few weeks back and the problem disappeared.
However, the problem has now reoccured.
Does anyone have any ideas regarding the nature of the problem and how it
can be resolved?
Extremely difficult to give suggestions without more information even hands-on. Perhaps the
application has a time-out? Did you get an error message or incorrect information? Perhaps there is
a time-out and no error is presented back to the user?
Another thing you can do is to capture the SQL statement submitted by the application with Profiler
and submit that same query using Query Analyzer. If the query work fine from Query Analyzer the
problem is in the application and you need to talk to the app vendor/developer.

I'm not sure that this would be a time out issue, as other reports
retrieving a lot more data are working correctly.

error in Query Analyzer.
A number of factors can contribute to a timeout. These include sub-optimal
query plan, blocking and server workload. If you've ruled out blocking and
an overtaxed server, I suggest you examine the plan of the problem query.
Perhaps additional indexes may help or existing indexes need to be rebuilt
using DBCC DBREINDEX. If you still have the problem after tuning, you'll
need to increase the application command timeout.
Hope this helps.

SqlCommand timeout is 30 seconds but this can be overridden by the
application. The default Query Analyzer query timeout is unlimited so,
assuming the query runs over 30 seconds, that explains why you don't get the
error in Query Analyzer.

Can't register SQL-DMO

Hi, this is an old issue and i've searched for days. I have a vb6 app thats
worked for years on a NT4/SQL7 server using the SQL7 client. We are finally
moving out of mixed mode and upgraded the server to NT2003/SQL 2000.
I upgraded and re-compiled the vb program and installed it on the users PC,
along with the sql2000 client. I would get an error connecting to the sql
2000 server. [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Drver][SQL Server]You must upgrade
your SQL Enterprise Manager and SQL-DMO(SQL OLE) to SQL 2000 (SQLDMO) to
connect to this server. Error Code -2147220990
After much research I found that I needed to install/register the SQL-DMO
and found a article (326613) from Microsoft on how to create a distribution
package.
I followed the instructions and the sql-dmo package worked fine, ON some
machines (XP), but I've found that many NT2000 PC's it simply won't install
and register on. It will come back with a HResult -2147024770 failed to
register sqldmo.dll
I've got all the files in the right place, with the .rll files where they
need to be. I can't even manually register the sqldmo.dll file on these
PC's.. The really strange part is if I install the full sql2000 server onto
the PC then the program runs fine. BUT, as soon as I uninstall the server
portion it fails again. I've tried installing both the SQL-2000 client and
client tools but nothing works short of a full SQL server install, Which is
not an option!
The PC's in question are all Compaq/HP EVO's running NT2000, standard fair
stuff, nothing strange on the desktop. All have the lastest updates, patches
and hotfixes.
I know this is an old issue, But does anybody have a clue? I'd hate to
tell my boss that those folks can't run the program unless they upgrade there
PC.
Im not sure if my dev system has service pack 4 or not, I'll have to check.
As far as being compiled with the newest MSVc++ runtime linked
lib,"msvcr71.dll I am using .net 2002 so I guess not. Strange that the
microsoft article (326613) says nothing about this. as far as the rest of
your statement all those files are included and in their correct directory
structure, Per the article I used to create the distribution package.
