Can't Start SS Business Intelligence installed from SS 2005 Express Edition Toolkit

I downloaded and installed Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit. Installs completed successfully, and I can launch the SS Management Studio, but when I launch SS Business Intelligence Development Studio, I get message saying "Windows is searching for devenv.exe". When I search for this file I don't find it on my hard drive.

I thought I'd reinstall the SS Express Edition Toolkit, but I can't find this application in the Control Panel Installed Programs list, so I can't uninstall it.

Any ideas as to how I can get SS Business Intelligence Studio working?

Hey Probie,

Individual SQL components are all listed in Add/Remove Programs under Microsoft SQL Server 2005. You have to launch the main app maintenance mode and then select the component you want to remove, in this case the Workstation Tools, an go from there.

It does look like something went wrong with the installation of the VS shell that BIDS uses, so uninstall is a likely first step.

Probie,

Do you have visual studio 2003 installed?

I had the same problem and it seemed related to VS2003:

Thanks for this information Lacan. Probie, let us know if this works for you.

Hello,

I am having the same problem as probie. Although BIDS shows in my programs menu, it does not appear as a component in Add/Remove programs neither will it run when accessed via the start menu.

Does anyone know if there is a way to resolve this issue?

Cheers,

sfx

|||

sfx1,

Did you already try what I had suggested via the link above?

(unzip the files from the SQLEXPR_TOOLKIT.EXE and launch the vs_setup.msi directly under the exposed \setup folder)?

When you say that it won't run, do you mean that the devenv.exe is not found? If so, please try what I suggested and see if it installs the devenv for you. If it doesn't work, try running that package vs_setup.msi with logging and see what the log says.

Regards,

Lacan

Hi Lacan,

Thank you for your reply. Did you happen to install the SQLEXPR_TOOLKIT.EXE prior to running the vs_setup.msi or did you just install the vs_setup.msi by itself?

Thanks again,

sfx1

|||

I believe the last time, I had tried to install everything gtom sqlexpr_toolkit.exe FIRST, and when the shortcut to BIDS did not work, I started exploring and found the vs_setup.msi and ran that.

It installed BIDS correctly, then I was able to start designing reports. Good question, and I should have been more explicit about the order. Thanks

Hi Lacan,

Thanks for getting back to me, I appreciate it. I will give your suggestions a go. :)

Cheers,

sfx1

|||

Lacan,

I found the vs_Setup.msi in the setup folder of SQLxpress Tools.exe. Ran the setup

(there is no indication that the vs_setup is running, but when I checked Processes in task manager, msiexec.exe was using CPU) ,

after setup ended, voila! devene.exe was in the IDE folder, and BIDS opened successfully.

Thanks for your help.

probie

|||

I didn't get any indication that setup was running either. The package just seemed to sound like it was responsible for the devenv part of it so I ran it as an experiment and the same occurred for me.

I'm glad it worked out.

Cant install sql server express...check out these errors

I can't get the download to work...i've tried regular sql server express 2005, the express for sp2 and the express with advanced services.  I keep getting this message after the native client and support files are installed.."This application has failed to start because XOLEHLP.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."Then right after that message is says... "Failed to load SQLSpars.dll"Follow up: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=437605&SiteID=1

Can't install Reporting Services and Full-Text Search on Windows Vista

When I install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP2 on Windows Vista, Reporting Services and Full-Text Search are not being installed. My user account is configured as a Standard User. When I initiate the installation, I'm prompted for the password for the administrator user account.

During the System Configuration Check, I get a warning for the IIS Feature Requirement action. The associated message says: "Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is either not installed or is disabled. IIS is required by some SQL Server features. Without IIS, some SQL Server features will not be available for installation. To install all SQL Server features, install IIS from Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel or enable the IIS service through the Control Panel if it is already installed, and then run SQL Server Setup again. For a list of features that depend on IIS, see Features Supported by Editions of SQL Server in Books Online."

KB Article 920201 ("You receive a warning message on the System Configuration Check page of the SQL Server 2005 Setup program on a computer that is running Windows Vista or a Server Core installation of Windows Server "Longhorn"") seems to address this issue. I used the Windows Features applet and selected all of the Internet Information Services items that were listed in the KB article; however, the "Windows Authentication" item was not in my list. ("IIS Metabase" and "IIS 6 WMI" were in my list but were worded differently--"IIS Metabase and IIS 6 configuration compatibility" and "IIS 6 WMI Compatibility", respectively--but I selected them both.) When I re-ran the SQLEXPR_ADV installer, I got the same warning...and Reporting Services and Full-Text Search were still not installed.

I went back into the Windows Features applet and selected all of the remaining unselected "Internet Information Services" items, and then re-ran the SQLEXPR_ADV installer. I got the same warning...and Reporting Services and Full-Text Search were still not installed.

It's frustrating that there is no obvious reason or error message as to why Reporting Services and Full-Text Search are not being installed. Are these features compatible with Windows Vista? Does anyone have an idea as to what the problem might be?

Which Vista edition do you have ?

Thanks, Jens. That blog entry is crystal clear. It would have been nice for the SQL Server 2005 SP2 Readme (especially the "Installation Requirements" section and/or the "Reporting Considerations for Windows Vista" section) to mention this requirement/limitation. I reviewed that document numerous times, without improvement.

I guess I'll be upgrading to Vista Ultimate right away!

|||

I used WindowsAnytimeUpdate.com to purchase and install Vista Ultimate. Upon the completion of the install and reboot, I noticed that Windows Authentication was now listed as an IIS option; however, all of the IIS options I had previously installed were no longer installed.

I installed all of the IIS options listed in that blog entry--which match the list of required options in MSKB 920201, BTW. Next, I re-ran SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP2. The System Configuration Check displayed the same warning about IIS being disabled or not being installed. I continued with the install anyway. Sure enough, the Feature Selection list did not display Reporting Services as an option. On the plus side: At least it no longer listed Reporting Services as an option, let me select it, and then not install it without any error message!

So at this point, I still haven't been able to install Reporting Services. Any other ideas?

Can't get new LUN/Logical Drive visible from within SQL Server on cluster.

We have had a working SQL Server 2000 SP3 (default instance) on two node MS
Windows 2000 Advanced Server with MS Cluster servcie working for over a year
now.
The shared Q: and E: drives are actually two seperate LUNS from a SAN
connected via Host Bus Adapters..
Recently, needed another logical drive. Added another LUN from the SAN.
Configured it as basic disk, drive letter F: It show up in Disk Manager
exactly like the pre-existing E: drive in terms of attribute values.
It is a working a normal drive on the primary node.
Using the cluster administrator, it was added as a physical disk resource
and added to the iManage SQL Cluster Group, the same as the E: drive.
It shows up as online and owned by the primary node where the SQL Server is
active.
However, it does not show up with the Enterprise Manage for the SQL Server.
Only E: is showing. Have even rebooted the nodes for the cluster.
The logical drive F: is available for all other uses, but it cannot be seen
by the SQL Server.

|||Thanks to Tom Moreau and yvr4 for their answers. I am pretty sure they both
identified the problem, I haven't been able to successfully test their
solution.
I had not added it as a dependency for the SQL Server. I only had it added
it to the SQL Cluster Group. I just tried adding it as a dependency to the
SQL Server.
FYI: The disk resource F: is online to the primary node and the SQL Server
is and online to the primary node.
In the cluster administrator, simply pulling up the properties to the SQL
Server and going to the Dependencies tab showed the F: drive on the left as
an available resource to be added as a dependency. I highlighted the F:
drive and tried to add it. I got a slightly ambiguous error message which I
will also type the text from the error message box.
Message box title: Cluster Administrator
Yellow triangle with exclamation point icon.
An error occurred attempting to add 'Disk F:' as a dependency of 'SQL
Server':
The operation could not be completed because the cluster resource is online.
Error ID: 5019 (0000139b).
This is a production environment: I am concerned about two things. Which
resource, the F: drive or the SQL Server is the error message meaning when
it say 'because the cluster resource is online' I know that I would like
for it to mean the disk drive, but I am modifying the SQL Server dependency
tree, so it is possible it means the SQL Server. I can't take that offline
except during a maintenance window. Also, if I simply take the disk drive
F: resource offline in the cluster administrator window in order to add it
to the SQL Server dependency tree, will it cause a fail-over of the SQL
Server since the newly defined dependency, F: disk drive resource, is not
online. That is what the dependency tree is for, isn't it.
I hope the answer is simply, take the disk drive F: resource offline in
cluster administrator, add it as a dependency to the SQL Server, and it will
either come online itself or I can manually bring it online, without the SQL
Server failing over.
Alternatively, I can accept needing to take the SQL Server offline in the
cluster administrator, having the disk drive F: resource online, adding it
as a dependency to the SQL Server and bringing the SQL Server online.
Sorry about these additional questions, but I thought the error message was
a little ambiguous, and I am concerned about adding an offline resource as a
dependency if it will cause a fail-over in our production environment. We
do not have a test cluster to try this on.
