Can't start SSIS

Hello,

Our enterprise have bought a sql server 2005 standard edition.
Before installing it i have installed the beta version.
And after I desinstalled this beta version (with difficulties).
But the problem is that I can't start SSIS.

I have the following message:
"The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion.
Consult event log or other applicable error logs for details.
"

Please can you help me.
Thanks.

You should really format the machine and reinstall the OS, especially if you had an early beta. The fact that you had problems cleaning it up would be a clear indication to me that you should do that more than ever.

Are there any errors in the event log, as the message directs?

Have you applied SP1? There is an issue with starting the service with that.

|||If you have installed SP1, please review this KB article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918644|||

Thanks!!!
In fact I haven't installed the SP1 because the SP1 I have seen is only for express edition (I have the standard edition)!!
For the event log I haven't seen it yet!! I'll try to do it Monday.

PS:
One thing I remembered during the installation is that all the system requirements were not OK.I didn't have errors but there were 2 warnings(i don't remember them)!! .

May be it will be that!!Or it will be because I haven't installed SP1 (if you know where I can download it please indicate me ).

Thanks for comments!!!

The SP1 can be downloaded http://www.microsoft.com/sql/sp1.mspx, but I don't think it will fix this particular issue.

I join Darren's advice to reinstall the OS if earlier it had any beta builds.

|||Thank U very much for your advice!!!
I will try reinstall SQL Server 2005 in a new machine wirhout any SQL 2005 beta version!!!
Thanks!!!

Can't Start SS Business Intelligence installed from SS 2005 Express Edition Toolkit

I downloaded and installed Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit. Installs completed successfully, and I can launch the SS Management Studio, but when I launch SS Business Intelligence Development Studio, I get message saying "Windows is searching for devenv.exe". When I search for this file I don't find it on my hard drive.

I thought I'd reinstall the SS Express Edition Toolkit, but I can't find this application in the Control Panel Installed Programs list, so I can't uninstall it.

Any ideas as to how I can get SS Business Intelligence Studio working?

Hey Probie,

Individual SQL components are all listed in Add/Remove Programs under Microsoft SQL Server 2005. You have to launch the main app maintenance mode and then select the component you want to remove, in this case the Workstation Tools, an go from there.

It does look like something went wrong with the installation of the VS shell that BIDS uses, so uninstall is a likely first step.

Probie,

Do you have visual studio 2003 installed?

I had the same problem and it seemed related to VS2003:

Thanks for this information Lacan. Probie, let us know if this works for you.

|||

Hello,

I am having the same problem as probie. Although BIDS shows in my programs menu, it does not appear as a component in Add/Remove programs neither will it run when accessed via the start menu.

Does anyone know if there is a way to resolve this issue?

Cheers,

sfx

|||

sfx1,

Did you already try what I had suggested via the link above?

(unzip the files from the SQLEXPR_TOOLKIT.EXE and launch the vs_setup.msi directly under the exposed \setup folder)?

When you say that it won't run, do you mean that the devenv.exe is not found? If so, please try what I suggested and see if it installs the devenv for you. If it doesn't work, try running that package vs_setup.msi with logging and see what the log says.

Regards,

Lacan

|||

Hi Lacan,

Thank you for your reply. Did you happen to install the SQLEXPR_TOOLKIT.EXE prior to running the vs_setup.msi or did you just install the vs_setup.msi by itself?

Thanks again,

sfx1

|||

I believe the last time, I had tried to install everything gtom sqlexpr_toolkit.exe FIRST, and when the shortcut to BIDS did not work, I started exploring and found the vs_setup.msi and ran that.

It installed BIDS correctly, then I was able to start designing reports. Good question, and I should have been more explicit about the order. Thanks

Regards,

-Lacan

|||

Hi Lacan,

Thanks for getting back to me, I appreciate it. I will give your suggestions a go. :)

Cheers,

sfx1

|||

Lacan,

I found the vs_Setup.msi in the setup folder of SQLxpress Tools.exe. Ran the setup

(there is no indication that the vs_setup is running, but when I checked Processes in task manager, msiexec.exe was using CPU) ,

after setup ended, voila! devene.exe was in the IDE folder, and BIDS opened successfully.

Thanks for your help.

probie

|||

I didn't get any indication that setup was running either. The package just seemed to sound like it was responsible for the devenv part of it so I ran it as an experiment and the same occurred for me.

I'm glad it worked out.

It's possible the SQLGUI.DLL is corrupt. Rename the file in the cluster and
copy from a machine which works.
Hope this helps,

Can't set the owner to the current login

I'm using express edition, compatibility set to 2005.

I'm logged in as DOMAIN\user, using windows authentication.

When I try to set the owner to this login, I get a "login does not exist on the server" error. Setting the owner to sa works fine.

Any fix to this problem ? Also - can I just work with the owner set to sa or can this cause problems in the future ?

Thanks.

If you could supply a little code that reproduces the error we could probably get an answer for you. What objects are you trying to own?

Yes, you can set the owner to sa, but then you have to work with the object as that login. It would be better to have that object owned by someone with only the rights that they absolutely need.

|||

The property that I'm trying to set is the database owner - in the database properties' files page. I need to do this in order to use diagrams, which are not available without a valid owner.

|||I see. Express doesn't allow diagrams.|||

Buck,

Thank you for trying to help.

The diagrams work fine - but the thing is that I have to set the owner to sa in order to work with them. The problem is that although I am logged in as DOMAIN\user, the server claims there is no such login when I try to set the database owner to that login.

|||

u may be login as Domain/User but in the database the user mapped to this login may be different .. check that...

SP_helpLogins 'Domian/Username' -- to get all the users mapped to this login

Madhu

|||

You know what - you're right! I was working on the older Express versions.

http://blogs.msdn.com/vsdata/archive/2004/09/30/236215.aspx

They have indeed put the diagrams back into Express.

Anyway, you seem to have a different issue, then. Have you tried putting the domain\user in the sysadmins group in SQL Server? I don't suggest leaving them there, but that might help you narrow the problem down. You only need to be in the db_owner role, but you can go high and bring the user account to that role later.

What message are you getting in the logs about this?

|||

I'm sorry, but I'm a newbie to sqlserver.

I guess I need to do some more reading before I can try to do these things (like putting the domain\user in the sysadmins group or using SP_helpLogins). I'm using Mannagement Studio Express and I can't find the correct way to do it.

Can't remotely access SQL 2005 named instance

SuHi,
I just installed SQL 2005 Developer Edition on a brand new W2K3 w/ SP1
server. I installed a default instance, and then a named instance called
"DEV".
Initially, I could not access either instance from a remote machine. I went
into SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and enabled TCP/IP and Named Pipes
under the Remote Access portion of the dialog for BOTH instances.
I can access the default instance from a remote machine. I still cannot
access the named instance from a remote machine. I have triple checked all
my settings. They are exactly the same for both instances.
The error message I receive is:
26 - Error locating server/instance specified
I can't see the DEV instance in the SQL Server browse list either.
Can anyone help?
Is the SQL Server Browser service started on the server?

Every surface you open opens increases the threat area. I don't know of any particular issues with
the SQL Browser. The same functionality existed in 2000, but it was built-in to the database engine.

Have you tried the SQL Server Configuration Manager on the W2K machine.

Sorry, this was my own fault. I solved the issue by removing a freeware download manager and re-downloading the videos. All the videos play fine now.

Here is the page with the videos reached by SQL Server Express-->Learning Resources:

And here is the pointer to the first video:

Thanks for your help!

For the last few weeks all the avi, mpg music files I have pop up this following error messages in WMPlayer.

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.
When trying to get more information I get this:
C00D1199: Cannot play the file

This information is very unhelpful, borders on useless, especially since ALL of these files were playing just fine BEFORE MS decided to "fix" Media player! I've tried playing it on WMPlayer, Apple iTunes and even divx, nothing!!!

Is there anyway to fix it back so the WMplayer will know exactly what to do instead of sending us off on wild goosechases to find some codes that were created that messed up something that was working perfectly fine, until the last update?!

I am not a programmer just a user and these type of error messages are so infuriating when they don't tell you precisely what to do to FIX the problem. Already uninstalled WMPlayer, nothing. Don't know what the heck to do!! HELP PLEASE! Thanks!

Can't login to SQL 2005 express edition through Mangerment Studio Express

Hi, all

I installed SQL 2005 express edition in my pc (Pro XP), then I can login from SQL 2005 Managerment Studio Express. After a few days later, I can't do it and an error message as belows:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)

It seems that the default setting does not allow remote connections, however, I connected it before and havn't change any setting. I try to reinstall the studio express but still not working.

Any idea / solution will be welcome.

Kevin Cheang

You are correct in that you need to enable remote connections for Express. Odd that you could connect before, but not now. Go ahead and enable remote connections and try again.

Thanks,
Sam Lester (MSFT)

Here's a previous reply for enabling connections:

You need to explicitly enable remote connections for SQL Express since they are off by default. You can enable them during install using the DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS flag:

(From template.ini)

;--
; The DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS switch is used to disable network protocol for SQL Server instance.
; Set DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS = 0; for Shared Memory= On, Named Pipe= On, TCP= On
; Set DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS = 1; for Shared Memory= On, Named Pipe= Off (Local Only), TCP= Off
; Set DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS = 2; for Shared Memory= On, Named Pipe= Off (Local Only), TCP= On

; Note: DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS if not specified has the following defaults.
; Default value for SQL Server Express/Evaluation/Developer: DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS =1
; Default value for Enterprise/Standard /Workgroup: DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS =2

or after install using TSQL or following this blog:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277

Thanks,
Sam Lester (MSFT)

Can't login to specific database with user sa, all others okay

Hi,
I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this. We're using sql
server express edition, and our server has a couple of databases (in
addition to the built in ones). We've been using user sa, with a
password set (non-blank) to access the databases. Suddenly, we can't
access the one of them. Unfortunately, we have no other users
configured with access to it either. Logging in with windows
authentication (as administrator) does not grant us access to the
database either. What can cause this? How can we fix it?
Thanks,
Aerik
What error message are you getting when you try to query the database?

Hi
SQL Server is only setup to be using NT Integrated security.
On the Server Properties page, you can configure SQL Server to be "Mixed
Mode" and restart SQL Server.

Can't log in to reporting services in my browser

I've installed the Developer's edition of SQL05 on my PC at home. I am able to open the reporting services via the Manager Studio and Windows login under my username and password, however I cannot open it in my browser when I enter the

http://computername/reports address. I get a login dialog and enter "computername/myloginID" for the user and my local login password. It will not accept the login and reprompt until I exceed 3 tries.

I also tried logging in with the PC's admin id and password as well as the sa account name and password.

Any ideas on what I missed in the setup or security?

Thanks for any assistance anyone can provide

mike...

Hi,

Did you installed a named SQL Server named instance? If so, you need to add the name of your instance to the url.

Are you using a proxy server?

Thank you for responding. The answer to both of your questions is no, I used the defaults through the entire install process. The service is running locally on my pc.

I've tried to log in via http://localhost/reports as well as http://<pcname>/reports. In both instances a dialog box with "Connect to <pcname>" with two fields one for my user name and one for a password. My normal password and ID does is not accepted.

This is usually an indication that the service is having some sort of fatal error. Can you look in the log files and see if there are any errors in there?

Hi Daniel, thanks for your suggestion. I found logs in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.3\Reporting Services\LogFiles, I assume this is the logs folder you mean.

I looked through some of the 50 or so log files there and saw nothing that looked like an error log, the all seem to be process tracking logs. Can you be more specific on which log I should look at?

Thanks

Hello Mike,

I believe this is due to the security settings in IIS. One thing to try is to enable anonymous access from the 'Reports' and 'ReportServer' directories in your IIS websites and see if it works. I had this same problem before I got the security settings ironed out in IIS.

In my setup, I have disabled anonymous access on the 'Default Web Site', 'Reports', and 'ReportServer' items. I have also enabled 'Integrated Windows authentication' on all 3. The DefaultAppPool runs as the Network Service.

From Reporting Services Configuration Manager, Report Server and Report Manager, both run in the DefaultAppPool application pool.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jarret,

Thank you for your tip, it did the trick! I enabled anonymous access access on the two folders and got into the Report Manager.

I guess this leads to another question, anonymous access is fine for me on my local machine here at home, but not exactly what I want on the production system at work. We're using Windows authentication at work, (with none of the problems I've had here at home that I am aware of), but I'm thinking I need to educate myself more on how the security settings between SQL05, Reporting Services, and IIS interact.

You spoke of "ironing out IIS security", can you recommend any resources from Microsoft which will help me learn how to manage security for SQL, etc.?

To all, thanks for your replies to my questions here!

|||

That is correct, I wouldn't set up my servers with anonymous access enabled either. I actually had one of my developers help me initially, but eventually I figured out how to have it work without anonymous access.

Sorry I don't have any links to any articles, I just haven't searched. Researching how the security between SQL2005, RS, and IIS work with each other is on my list of things to do as well.

Can't Install SSIS

Ok, I am stumped.
On a clean Windows Server 2003 machine we installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition.
We then installed all of the components, including BIDS. however, there is no option to start BIDS and I see devenv.exe does not exist.

Do I need VS installed in order to run BIDS and SSIS?

Thanks for any help!
Pete Verrone
It is Itanium machine? Unfortunately, Visual Studio (and thus BIDS) are not supported on Itanium.

On any other platform, BIDS shortcut should be in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 start menu folder.

Cant Install SQLServer 2005

I installed Visual Studio 2005 (released edition) that I downloaded from MSDN, and then went to install the released edition of SQL Server 2005. On the SQL Server 2005 setup "components to install" screen, all but the last choice ("Workstation components, Books Online, and development tools" are grayed out so I cannot install them.
The machine on which I was installing these had just been re-imaged and was clean.
How do I get around this so I can install SQL Server2005?
MarkHi Mark
I also have the same problem. This is the message I got: setup has detected a problem with microsoft.Net framework installation and cannot proceed. Microsoft framework 2.0 is either not installed on this system or is corrupt.
No idea what to do. I have uninstalled vs 2005 though and have vs 2003. That works fine.

Cant Install SQL Standard Edition on VISTA Ultimate

I ve been coping with the follwing Error for 2 months , and i desperately need sb helping me out with a practical solution. the error has become a real pain in the neck 4 me .I want to install SQL 2005 standard edition on a vista ultimate however the error appears at almost the end of installation proceess .and the sql server database services fails to be installed on vista? and doesnt get a check mark. this is the Error:

sQL Server Setup failed to execute a command for server configuration. The error was [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Windows NT user or group 'computer-name\SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$computer-name$MSSQLSERVER' not found. Check the name again..

It sounds to me like you are running into the problem that is described in the following article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932593/en-us

You can try following the instructions in that article to obtain the fix, or try using the workaround from the article. If neither of these helps resolve your problem, please follow up by posting to the SQL Server Setup forum, not the MSDN and TechNet Feedback forum. The SQL Server Setup forum is here:

hope this helps,
