Can't Start SS Business Intelligence installed from SS 2005 Express Edition Toolkit

I downloaded and installed Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit. Installs completed successfully, and I can launch the SS Management Studio, but when I launch SS Business Intelligence Development Studio, I get message saying "Windows is searching for devenv.exe". When I search for this file I don't find it on my hard drive.

I thought I'd reinstall the SS Express Edition Toolkit, but I can't find this application in the Control Panel Installed Programs list, so I can't uninstall it.

Any ideas as to how I can get SS Business Intelligence Studio working?

Hey Probie,

Individual SQL components are all listed in Add/Remove Programs under Microsoft SQL Server 2005. You have to launch the main app maintenance mode and then select the component you want to remove, in this case the Workstation Tools, an go from there.

It does look like something went wrong with the installation of the VS shell that BIDS uses, so uninstall is a likely first step.

Hello,

I am having the same problem as probie. Although BIDS shows in my programs menu, it does not appear as a component in Add/Remove programs neither will it run when accessed via the start menu.

Does anyone know if there is a way to resolve this issue?

Did you already try what I had suggested via the link above?

(unzip the files from the SQLEXPR_TOOLKIT.EXE and launch the vs_setup.msi directly under the exposed \setup folder)?

When you say that it won't run, do you mean that the devenv.exe is not found? If so, please try what I suggested and see if it installs the devenv for you. If it doesn't work, try running that package vs_setup.msi with logging and see what the log says.

I believe the last time, I had tried to install everything gtom sqlexpr_toolkit.exe FIRST, and when the shortcut to BIDS did not work, I started exploring and found the vs_setup.msi and ran that.

It installed BIDS correctly, then I was able to start designing reports. Good question, and I should have been more explicit about the order. Thanks

I found the vs_Setup.msi in the setup folder of SQLxpress Tools.exe. Ran the setup

(there is no indication that the vs_setup is running, but when I checked Processes in task manager, msiexec.exe was using CPU) ,

after setup ended, voila! devene.exe was in the IDE folder, and BIDS opened successfully.

I didn't get any indication that setup was running either. The package just seemed to sound like it was responsible for the devenv part of it so I ran it as an experiment and the same occurred for me.

Can't save or compile package (insufficient memory)

When I compile or save a SSiS package in the SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio I get the error

Failure saving package. (Microsoft Visual Studio)

Insufficient memory to continue the execution of the program.

Sometimes, if I wait longer time, the package can suddenly be saved.

I have 2 GB of RAM und over 15 GB of free space on my disk. Thus, there should be anough space to save the package.

What should I do to resolve this problem? It seems to be a bug.

To splitt the package would not be a solution.

How large is the package, and what version of Visual Studio are you running?

Package 'DataWarehouse VSIntegration layer' has failed t load peoperly (guid = etc..). Please contact package vendor for assistance. Application restart is recommended, due to possible enfvironment corruption. Would you like to disable loadinug for this package in the future? you may use 'devenv /resetskippkgs' to re-enable package loading.

I also tried to create a new Reporting services project and I got the following error....

Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.ReportingServices.Designer, Version=9.0.242.0...blah blah.

Some of my research so far says the first message could be related to having ran a beta version of vs2005 on this system which I did. However the ordinary vs2005 asp.net project appear to run normally.

How can I fix this problem?

First thing would be for me trying to reinstall the Reporting Services package. If that doen not help, reinstall VS and the reporting package with prior removing all related stuff from the server. if you had beta products from VS / SQL Server installed use the cleanup utility from Microsoft. That often helps more than getting the old installation to work properly.

I had the same error messages (wouldn't let me open an existing BI project or create a new one). I spent at least 4 hours struggling with this and various other posts on this issue. I found it strange that microsoft's forums are full will this question but there is no official solution from them on this issue. I wish they published a knowledgebase article on this that took care of the issue for once and for all.

Anyway! What worked for me is that I installed Microsoft SqlServer Express client tools. I already had SqlServer 2005 (client tools) , Sqlserver 2005 express (database only), and Visual Studio 2005 professional installed. The order I had initially installed was that I had first installed VS.Net 2003, then installed SqlServer 2005 (client tools), then Visual Studio 2005, and inally SqlServer 2005 Express (database only). Somewhere in between I had installed the reporting services, however I don't remember exactly the sequence for this. To make the matter wors, I had installed some of these on D drive (to save on C space), as many of the posters have reported that this can also cause the issue.

Its unlikely that you may have the same problem as I, but just in case!

I downloaded sql server express 2005 tool kit which contains Business
Intelligence Studio which is what houses Reporting services. I installed it
but now I can't find where to run it. I re-installed thinking something went
wrong with the install but it says already installed. How can I run this

can't load SSIS dtsx package

hi there,

when i start SQL Server business intelligence developer and create new Integration Service project, i will see following error:

Error loading 'Package.dtsx' : Object reference not set to an instance of an object.. C:\Sairi\My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Projects\Integration Services Project12\Integration Services Project12\Package.dtsx

this error occures just on my PC and i reinstalled VS2005 and SQL2005 again and unfotunately the problem existes.

please someone helps me (just don't tell me to format my PC!!!)

It looks like BIDS is trying to open a project/package that does not exists anymore. The weird thing is that when that happens BIDS prompts you to remove the invalid references and the error goes away. Don't you see that message?

Can you do File->Close solution/project ?

BTW, that error should not prevent you from using BIDS.

as a good practice always use close solution/project before closing BIDS. This is because BIDS always tries to re-open all projects and packages that were opend at the time of exiting.

my problem is creating or editing SSIS packages in BIDS.
even in new SSIS project when i add new SSIS packages or existing packages (dtsx) my BIDS doesn't show its designer and shows same error.

i think it cant find SSIS DTS base class or its references for showing SSIS designer.|||It looks like an installation issue to me. Try re-installing the client tools to see if BIDS gets fixed.|||

I second that, it's likely a setup issue. Pls try to confirm for example whether "dts.dll" is under your \Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn to see whether you did encounter a setup issue and if yes, reinstall Integration Service from SQL Server Work Station Components to see whether that helps.
