Can't Sum Table Fields in SQL 2000 Reporting Services Report
The only thing showing in these tables are the group footers because
the detail data is not needed.
I am needing to add a total for a column in each table and then add
those totals together in a text box.
When ever I do this I am getting the following errors:
The value expression for the text box 'textbox58' uses an aggregate
function on a report item. Aggregate functions can be used only on
report items contained in page headers and footers.
The value expression for the text box 'textbox37' uses an aggregate
expression without a scope. A scope is required for all aggregates
used outside of a data region unless the report contains exactly one
data set.
I've tried several different ways and still can't figure it out, PLEASE
HELP!!A few design suggestions. If you don't need the detail then don't return it.
Let SQL Server do the work. But, let's say you continue the way you are
today. What I do sometimes is to add a colum to the result set and make it
calculated, then using the expression editor make it the sum of the two
fields. This makes things a whole lot easier at times.
Once you have done this you can use the expression editor, base it on the
dataset and sum up the column.

In my dataset there are 5 columns that will alwayse have the same
result and one column that has detail data that needs to be summed. If
I sum that one column in SQL I have to have the other columns in an
aggregate function as well. In SQL 2000 the "First" function is not
supported. Any ways around that?
Once I get the totals in each table on my report how can I grab those
totals and sum them in a textbox? It keeps telling me that "Aggregate
functions can be used only on
report items contained in page headers and footers."
Thanks A Lot!

ReportItems("textbox2").Value etc.
You need to know the names of the textboxes, so you might want to name the
textboxes with something more descriptive than textbox1 etc before you start
summing. :)
(Not sure if it's ReportItems or ReportItem, so you might have to try both.)

Cant start report server
Hey all. I'm using SQL server Express and I've installed the Report service. When I go into the reporting services configuration manager and I want to start the service, the system won't let me. Here is the error
System.ServiceProcess.TimeoutException: Time out has expired and the operation has not been completed.
at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController.WaitForStatus(ServiceControllerStatus desiredStatus, TimeSpan timeout)
at ReportServicesConfigUI.Panels.ServerInformationPanel.StartStopServiceTask(Boolean start)
I just can't seem to be able to start the service.
Can you plz help?
Thanks
Hi,
Based on my understanding, this error message is caused by the permission issue. You should take a look at the Report Server logs, and make sure you are configuring locally and you are administrator on the machine. And re-modify your reporting service configuration in the following way:
1. Created ReportService database using Report Service Configuration
2. Edited your personal account to Web Service Account in rsreportserver.config
3. Used rsconfig utility to encrypt the connection and account information
4. Edited your personal account to <processModel userName=" " >
If the problem still exists, you should try the following methods.
Set the Report Server Web service and Report Manager to use the same application pool.
|||Thank you for your answer. But how can I create a reportservice database if I can't connect to the service?
++ Where do I go to
Set the Report Server Web service and Report Manager to use the same application pool.
Add the security account to the SQLServer2005ReportingServicesWebServiceUser$InstanceName group that you use for the application pool identity.

Can't start 2005 Report Services on XP SP2
I am attempting to get a test environment up and running on my XP SP2
machine but I can't start reporting services. I found the following log in
the Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.3\Reporting Services\LogFiles directory:
ReportingServicesService!servicecontroller!4!28-03-2006-09:27:22:: e ERROR:

Anybody have any clues?
Thanks in advance,
Antony C. Roberts. In desperation, I created an ASPNET user and gave it all possible roles.
That solved the problem... What is the CORRECT solution to this problem?
Thanks!

Can't send Attachement (Report Delivering)
Iâ'm trying to enable the scheduled report delivering. It is working fine
without attachment (except the mail is in the SMTP-queue, but this is another
issueâ?¦ï' ). But Iâ'm not able to send a mail including a rendered report.
Here is my environment:
- Windows 2003 Advanced Server
- Reporting Services Service Pack 1
- SQL Server Service Pack 3a
- NT 4 Domain (very old, I knowâ?¦)
- SQL Reporting Service running using a Domain Account (having local
Admin on Server)
- SQL Service & Agent running the same Domain Account
- Reporting Server is configured to relay the Mails to an other SMTP
Host within our network
Any ideas?
Thanks in advanceâ?¦

log file that should contain the error information. Is the status of the

Can't seem to fix the column width
the column group. Works great!
However - now I can't seem to fix the width of the columns. It just
grows and ignores the property. I have tried to set it for each
individual cell in that matrix. And I have tried to specify the size..
Any idea?
ThxI am not sure when the column width grows. Does this happen when authoring
the report or when you render it? Would you please add some more detail
reproduction steps to your description.

Create a matrix.
Add a field to the column group textbox.
Fix column width - by selecting Cannot Grow.
Fix the Cell width - by selecting cannot Grow.
Works great!
Now add a rectangle inside the column group textbox...
The 'Cannot grow' fails...|||CanGrow only applies to vertical growth, not horizontal growth. However, the
only thing that grows horizontally is autosized images and matrices (per
column group instance).

Can't see the ReportManager from another workstation
while trying to figure it out.
I have had a report ready on my Report Manager, but I could not run it on
any other workstations at all. My workstation is using IIS 5.1, Win XP, RS
2000 and VS .NET 2003. The database server and report server is a remote
server.
I am thinking maybe I just missed something in the configuration. Please
advise. Thanks a lot.Check that you have given the correct security permissions for your users.
If you are saying that you log in with your own credentials on several boxes
but can only access the report manager from one box then that is a different
problem.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I logged in the computers under the same domain ID.
Does this cause the problem?

then click on Site Settings
(What we are doing is verifying that no one changed anything for the Browser
rights)
In the Security section, click the "Configure item-level role definitions"
link
Next, click the browser role.
Verify that View folders, View models, view reports, view resources, and
manage individual subscriptions is checked (this is the default settings)
If any are missing, check them and then click Ok
Next, go back to your home page by click the Home link in the upper right.
Click the Properties tab.
You should see two entries (by default only one - the BUILTIN\Administrators
will be listed)
The other entry should be (if you want domain users to have rights to see
this report server) is:
DOMAIN\Domain Users (where DOMAIN is the name of your domain)
If you don't see your domain users being listed, then click "New Role
Assignment" and then check the box for Browser rights and type the group you
want to have rights. In this case, DOMAIN\Domain Users
If they still cannot connect, log them off their workstation, and log back
on after making these changes.

Can't see the Report Manager page
Hi There,
I have installed the Sql Server 2005 reporting services and I see that two default directories being created in IIS (Report and ReportServer..). For some reason, if I type http://localhost/reports, I am unable to see the report manager homepage. Can anybody suggest me if I need to configure any more stuff to see the report manager?
I enabled the anonymous authentication and still cannot see....
I can see the webservice however by typing http://localhost/reportserver...
Any suggestions are greatly apprecaited...
Thanks.
Sam.
I got it. I had to set up the reportserver to be accessible anonymous along with Reports.
Thanks.
cant see Report manager page
we've report server (sql server 2005 standard edi) on win 2003 server. i can see report manager page (i.e. http://servername/reports) from my machine but some of out users cant see this page !!
all they can see is "sql server reporting services" text nothing else. no reports and no models ertc.,
i assume its something to do with rights issue. where can i set these rights so that all users within our domain can see and create reports off report server page.
Thanks for your help. From the main page, select the properties tab, then select the security sub-tab. You can grant the necessary permissions to any group or user there.|||Thanks for that Brian. I just tried that but did not work.
our domain name is "yabba.co.nz" so i added domain by clicking "new role assignment" but to no avail.
so i tried add one of users ,who is having this problem like "yabba.co.nz\Peter" but got following error
The user or group name 'yabba.co.nz/Peter' is not recognized. (rsUnknownUserName)
any ideas please.
Thanks for your help|||You should be specifying the user or group name the same way you would for an ACL, such as for the file system. If you are using a domain user, the report server machine must be a part of that domain.|||Thank you very much Brian.
That really helped . now all our users could view report manager page and they can view and run reports now :)
one thing remained though, they cant see "Report builder" link .i tried to assign all roles (i.e. browser, content manager etc.,) but still did not help.
any ideas on this one.
Thanks for your help again :)|||
The user must have "Execute Report Definition" permission. This is a system level permission that can be configured from the "Site Settings" link at the top of Report Manager.
|||Thank you very much Brian. That worked like a charm. Thanks for all your help :)
Cant see image
Hello, my image is stored on the database as an URL, not binary.
I put a textbox and the url is show on the report,
then I put an image and this expression
=(ReportItems!dslogo.Value)
dslogo is the name of the textbox where the url is. but I dont see my image yet.
Did you set the source property of the image to "External"? Do you get the image in designer preview?|||Its external and no I dont see it in the preview neither,
when I copy paste the url in the browser it shows me the image.
|||Hmm, I tried a simple repro and it worked just fine for me. Here is the rdl I used:

The reporting server is in another server than my machine, the image is on the reporting service but I am testing the report from the preview tab. Maybe it fails because the image is on another server and the report is not deployed?
The image is inside a folder of a web application
C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\Application\images\image1.gif.
Does the folder need special permissions, or do I have to configure reportserver XML configuration files to execute on another context?
Thanks
Can''t see function for code added in Report Properties
I put a function in the code section of Report Properties. I went to add an expression and can't find the function. I type =code. and did not see the function I created in the list.
Here's my code below:
Code Snippet
Public Function ConvertToStartDate(ByVal StartDate As String) As DateTime
Select Case StartDate
Case "Today"
Return DateTime.Today
Case "Yesterday"
Return DateTime.Today.AddDays(-1)
Case "30DaysOut"
Return DateTime.Today.AddDays(+30)
Case "2DaysPrior"
Return DateTime.Today.AddDays(-2)
' Additional cases
Case Else
Throw New ArgumentException("Unknown argument, " & StartDate, "StartDate")
End Select
End Function
I should be able to put in expression =code.ConvertToStartDate.StartDate("Today"), but that does not work. I get a red squiggly line under StartDate.
Thanks for your help,
Iris
from your code snippet up above, you would use:
=Code.ConvertToStartDate("Today")
I havent had the intellisense work on custom function code.

Can't see content tab or properties tab.
report manager, I cannot see anything on the home page, no tabs at all. How
do I set it up to show me these tabs?
Thanks,
Rick.Log into the machine locally as a member of the local administartor's group.
You'll be able to assign permissions either using the SiteSettings-->Manage
site wide security or through the properties tab

Can't see a graphical inicator
of the columns. However, only the green and reds are showing up. The ones
that should be yellow are blank. We cannot see anything different in the
coding for yellow as the others. Any ideas? This has been resolved. We had this codded as a value instead of color.

Can't Save Report Parameters
and it is just not possible to save report parameters as selected by the
user! The only way you can save them is if you re-invent your own parameter
inputs! And keep in mind that a complete integration solution should be able
to accept any possible combination of report parameters!
I think this is another oversight in the design of this product from
microsoft. They have specially designed ways to cache report data, saving
history, etc... But what about the more common case of wanting fresh data
for the same parameters? I am amazed that they did not think of this...
Is there anything like this in the works for version 2... Yes?
Please tell me yes :-]
MalikLet me also clarify that the difficulty here is getting the parameter input
from the user.
If I already know what parameters I want to run the report for, there is no
problem.
The problem is, the user can change them and then re-run the report, and I
have no idea
what parameters are currently in the report being displayed!

Thanks very much for your report. This is exactly the kind of solution I
need, although there are still a few problems.
I thought of doing it this way, but I am trying to fully integrate SQL RS
with our Web Application. I don't want to have to explain to our customers
that in order to design reports for use with our application you have to
always have those extra data sources present along with code to retrieve the
parameters. This puts the onus on the report developer to be a coder rather
than me taking care of the whole solution myself.
I suppose I could come up with some kind of template report that our
customers can start with, and that would make this a workable solution for
us. I am going over your report in more detail to see what I can learn from
it.
Your help has been quite valuable for my project, and I really appreciate
you sending the report!
Thank you very much indeed,
Malik

have to do the following:
- prompt for any combination of parameters
- include default values and available values, with queried available
values in a drop-down list
- validate all parameter data types entered, null and blank values
- correctly take hidden parameters from the URL when they are passed
This would have to be robust enough for any report that my customers can
design to work with my web app.
I don't want to be lazy, but since RS already does all of this, I don't want
to re-invent the wheel.
I think it would be much easier for someone who already knows what
parameters are in the reports. In my scenario, our customers will expect to
just open a SQL RS report from our web app. They may design their own, or
get reports from elsewhere. It is a full integration.
I am still very much in design mode (although I should have finished long
ago :-) so I am quite open to suggestions.
Thanks again for your help.
