Can't start MSDTC
I have following entries in event log
Event Type: Information
Event Source: MSDTC
Event Category: TM
Event ID: 53283
Date: 7/7/2004
Time: 9:19:01 AM
User: N/A
Computer: Some
Description:
DTC Security Configuration values. Network Administration of Transactions =
1, Network Clients = 0, Distributed Transactions using Native MSDTC
Protocol = 1, Transaction Internet Protocol (TIP) = 0, XA Transactions = 1.
(OFF = 0 and ON = 1).
Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSDTC
Event Category: LOG
Event ID: 4163
Date: 7/7/2004
Time: 9:19:01 AM
User: N/A
Computer: some
Description:
MS DTC log file not found. After ensuring that all Resource Managers
coordinated by MS DTC have no indoubt transactions, please run
msdtc -resetlog to create the log file.
[I have tried it and with no success]
Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSDTC
Event Category: SVC
Event ID: 4437
Date: 7/7/2004
Time: 9:19:01 AM
User: N/A
Computer: Some
Description:
The account that the MS DTC service is running under is invalid. This can
happen if the service account information has been changed using the
Services snap-in in Microsoft Management Console (MMC). MS DTC service will
continue to start. Please make sure that the MS DTC service account
information is updated using the Component Services Explorer.
How can I fix it?
It seems that because of it I can't install SQL Server 2005 Express.
If it is wrong newsgroup maybe someone can redirect me to the right one.
Thanks,
Shimon.
Go to Control panel->services or Administrative Tools-> services and find
the MS DTC service. There will be a properties box where you can change the
login/password under which dtc run... The first error message states that
the login/password is bad... (Maybe someone changed the password for the DTC
login...)
Hope this helps.

Can't set varbinary(MAX) in Visio 2005
1. Create new database model diagram
2. Go to Database -> Options -> Drivers
3. Select "Microsoft SQL Server" in the default driver for Visio
4. Click Setup
5. Pick "SQL Native Client" for ODBC drivers to use
6. Go to preferred settings tab and select 2005 in the preferred version drop-down under DDL script generation
7. Now when you create an entity and create a new column will see varchar(MAX), nvarchar(MAX), varbinary(MAX) and xml as data type options.|||Many thanks for that Umachandar!

Can't see reportserver and reports applications
type http://192.168.1.49:8888/reportserver I see the directory list.
With http://192.1681.49:8888/reports, I see an error: The request failed
with HTTP status 503: Service Unavailable. The error is in URL.
http://192.168.1.49:8888/reports/Pages/Folder.aspx, so at least I know is
inside the application.
I'm completely stuck. What can I do or where can I search?
--
Regards,
Diego F.Google is your friend. Type in "reporting services" 503 "service
unavailable" and you'll get quite a lot of info. Not all of it is directly
connected to Reporting Services, but you should be able to pick up some info
on the 503 problem in general. It seems that there's a problem with the
Reporting Services web service.
Are you allowed to log on to the actual server and try running Report
Manager from that box?
What sort of authentication is set?
Try adding the report server site to your Trusted sites in IE, and then
change the Security Settings for Trusted Sites to "Prompt for user name and
password" in User Authentication - Logon. Type in your username and
password. If it fails, that might be what causes the problem. In that case,
you need to figure out what rights are needed for you to access the reports.

I installed again the whole server: Window 2003 and SQL Server 2005 full.
Now I finally see the reports site :-)
There is a Visual Studio installed with SQL 2005 and I can design reports
there. But now I don't know how to configure the project to deploy
correctly.
I get that error:
A connection could not be made to the report server http://localhost/reports
Additional information:
The attempt to connect to the report server failed. Check your connection
information and the report server is a compatible version.
(Microsoft.ReportingServices.Designer).
If I try with: http://localhost/reportserver then I get a compilation error:
The Report Server Windows Service ReportServer is not running. The service
must be running to use the Report Server.
How can I solve that?

Open your Reports site, is probably under Web SItes - Default Web Site.
RIght click and choose Browse. Does it open correctly?
If it does, what is the URL? I did a test install of the 2005 edition, and I
think you might get some extra "name" or something, like
http://localhost/reports$instancename
Which means that the reports are still there, but the URL might have
changed. Or something.
Also, with Sql Server 2005 there's an nice Reporting Services configuration
tool. Start it and look to see if there are any things that needs to be
started.

Then, as I asked you before, is the idea to create all the reports I need
and upload to the server?
My idea is to intergate that in a web application, so I expected to show
just the report by clicking a button. Is that possible?
And last but not least ;-), is it possible to dinamically -by code- generate
the reports temporally? I have all my queries as stored procedures.
Thanks a lot!

1. URL Integration
2. Web Services
3. Visual Studio 2005 Reporting Control
The reporting control has a local mode, you get it a datatable and a report.
I suggest you back up and learn how to create reports before you deal with
integration. There is a lot more that you have to do in local mode.
Normal function is to create a report and deploy it. Make sure it works from
the shipping portal (Report Manager web site).
Have your queries as stored procedures is great. No reason to create the RDL
on the fly. Just pass parameters to the report and use your stored
procedure.

- Create your reports locally, deploy to the server.
- When it comes to webapplications, you can either link directly to each
report, with parameters and everything else, or you can create an iFrame and
make the Report Manager show up inside. (Look for tips on integrating with
SharePoint, even if you're not using SharePoint, as you can use some of the
info in your web app.)
http://blogs.spipp.net/kaisa/archive/2005/09/27/1185.aspx
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2000/maintain/webrssp2.mspx
The beauty of using an iFrame against Report Manager, is that Report Manager
will still deal with authentication for the different reports.
- Make sure to test your reports with user accounts with less priveleges
than yourself, before allowing your users to try them out. SOmetimes setting
the rights values in the datasource can be a bit tricky.

integrates easily with my application.
I tried with a test server I installed just to make tests with that. The
only problem I met is that I have to put user and password, but I hope that
doing from the same domain avoids that.
Anyway, it's a lot of work to manually create each report from a whole
application.

Can''t see function for code added in Report Properties
I put a function in the code section of Report Properties. I went to add an expression and can't find the function. I type =code. and did not see the function I created in the list.
Here's my code below:
Code Snippet
Public Function ConvertToStartDate(ByVal StartDate As String) As DateTime
Select Case StartDate
Case "Today"
Return DateTime.Today
Case "Yesterday"
Return DateTime.Today.AddDays(-1)
Case "30DaysOut"
Return DateTime.Today.AddDays(+30)
Case "2DaysPrior"
Return DateTime.Today.AddDays(-2)
' Additional cases
Case Else
Throw New ArgumentException("Unknown argument, " & StartDate, "StartDate")
End Select
End Function
I should be able to put in expression =code.ConvertToStartDate.StartDate("Today"), but that does not work. I get a red squiggly line under StartDate.
Thanks for your help,
Iris
from your code snippet up above, you would use:
=Code.ConvertToStartDate("Today")
I havent had the intellisense work on custom function code.

cant print variable
In the query analyser if I type the following:
DECLARE @.SortOrder integer
exec pr_Admin_SetFieldSortOrder @.SortOrder
print @.SortOrder
@.SortOrder is never printed. I just get the message saying that the
Query Batch Completed.
Why ?
RegardsI guess @.SortOrder is an output parameter? If so, you need to add
OUTPUT:
exec pr_Admin_SetFieldSortOrder @.SortOrder OUTPUT

I'm not sure if I am following you correctly; however, in terms of
referential integrity (i.e., primary key to foreign key relationships)
the data types have to match quite closely. You could try casting one
of the fields to the other to make them match, of course, this may not
resolve your issue. Otherwise, you might want to change the datatype
of one of the fields to the other and use a constraint, etc to enforce
the original integer length. Hope this helps.

cant login into lcoal when installing time tracker starter kit..
During the istall of the issue tracker starter kit, im prompted ti select the type of DB. If I select MSACCESS, all is good
I have " Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services" installed
If I select Microsoft SQL Server/MSDE 2000 I get the following
1) Sql Server ( I select local)
2) connect using
a) Windows authentication - WhenI do this I get the error message "Login Failure: could not loginto server (local)"
b) SQL Server authtication - WhenI do this I get the error message "Login Failure: could not loginto server (local)"
Please Please help me. I have to get this going or I'm mud !!! actually , less than mud
The error message seems to be customized and you may need to find the original exception that came from .NET. However if you haven't enabled remote connections for the SQL Express instance, try to enable this option in SQL Server Surface Area Configuration.
Can't launch executable from SQL Server Agent Job
maybe what you need to type is notepad.exe alone
anyway you can also
place a jobstep containing
exec xp_cmdshell 'notepad.exe'
for more details on xp_cmdshell please consult BOL
or see this link

|||Thanks joeydj but I've tried xp_cmdshell method and that does not work either. I've also tried launching a batch file (.bat) that calls the .exe and that does not work. The batch call (job) is successfull but again the .exe does not launch. I would like to know if anyone else has had this work for them (launch an .exe directly from a job). I'm starting to think there may be a security setting not allowing executables to be launched. My last option would be an SSIS(DTS) package but since just typing "start xxx.exe" is so straight forward I was trying to avoid the SSIS(DTS).
Note: Gosh I forgot to mention I'm using SQL Server 2005 Standard version.
|||xp_cmdshell is disabled by default in sql server 2005.
Permissions
Execute permissions for xp_cmdshell default to members of the sysadmin fixed server role, but can be granted to other users.

Yes. You can. you scenario and encountered the same error

Dim mySQL as String = "Insert Into Products (Delivery, Price) Values (" & Dvalue.Text & ", " & Pvalue.Text & ")"
sqlCmd = New SQLCommand(mySQL,sqlConn)
sqlConn.Open()
sqlCmd.ExecuteNonQuery()
sqlConn.Close()
End Sub
</script>
<form action="" runat="server">
Delivery - <asp:TextBox ID="Dvalue" runat="server" /><br>
Price - <asp:TextBox ID="Pvalue" runat="server" /><br>
<Asp:Button id="Submit" runat="server" text="Insert" onclick="Submit_Click" />
</form
And add in the values as
Delivery - 12.9999
Price - 56.777
The resulting numbers on the database are
Delivery - 13
Price - 57
Im using 1and1 to host my sql database and using their own SQL admin tool to configure it.
The price column has the following options
Name - Price
Type - Decimal
size(if char) - 19 ( i cant seem to change this)
default value - <blank> (I cant seem to change this)
No other options are ticked (as in nullable, indexed, unique key, primary key, identity)
Is there some setting or something ive missed/ dont know about? (ive only really used access and mysql in the past)
I would really appreciate any helpFirst, I woulduse parameters.
Next, run SQL Profiler and look at what you are actually sending to the database.|||Thanks for the quick reply :)
I cant use SQL Profiler as its a shared account over at www.1and1.co.uk
(I cant seem to even run proper SQL statements that alter tables etc)
The script im trying to fix uses a dataset and the update command, but has the exact same problem as the little example of my woe script i posted here.
Im trying to figure out if its me whos to blame, or some setting on the SQL database i need to annoy them to fix.|||What is the scale set to on your table? Precision will likely be 18, but the default scale is 0, and so you will loose anything to the right of the decimal.|||Im going to call them now. Their administration thingy isnt exactly great.
Thanks for your help|||Suffice to say they dont know whats wrong and ive been put on the mighty waiting list.
They suspect it might to be with the server being German and using , instead of . for the decimal.
So i tried both using their control panel by entering in the SQL for it
Insert Into Products (Price, RRP, Delivery) values ('12.99', '12.99', '22.22')
Which rounded it up again.
There isnt any way i can change the precision from what i can see, so ive had to nag them.
Thanks again for your help.|||I would try to create a table like so (using SQL Script):
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[DecimalTestTable] (
[ID] [int] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,
[DecimalTest] [decimal](18, 5) NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
Now, if you can insert properly into this table (up to 5 decimal places) then that is your issue.|||I just ran the SQL statement on it
Insert Into DecimalTestTable (DecimalTest) Values ('12.99999')
And Sucess!
12.99999
However, when i try it using their "add new row" it comes up as 129999!
No wonder im confused...
Suffice to say im going to throw their admin tool in the bin and recreate all my tables (nothing much important on them at this stage)
Thanks again, you saved my hairline!
can't import .sql
i uses sql server 2005 express ,and type command as follow to import data : osql -E -S (local)\NetSDK -i InstNwnd.sql (as in Data Access - Bind Data in a ComboBox sample) but got an error :
D:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SDK\v2.0\Samples\Setup>osql -E -S (lo
cal)\NetSDK -i InstNwnd.sql
[SQL Native Client]SQL Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance

[SQL Native Client]An error has occurred while establishing a connection to
the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by
the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
what's is it ? and how i can import data ? thanks
Hi,if you don′t have SQL Browser Service started, make sure that the instance you want to connect to is on the default port (1433) or you specify the portname after the instancename e.g. (local)\NETSDK,1477. If you have SQL Bworser service started, it should redirect you to the port of the named instance. If that all did not help, meke sure that you enabled remote connections in SQl Server. I have a screencast for this published on my site under Screencast > Enable remote connections.
