Can't start the SQLAGENT service

Hi Guru,
I'm tired of trouleshoot one of my sql box that the sqlagent can't started.
Here is the message:
SQLServerAgent could not be started (reason: Unable to connect to server '
(local)'; SQLServerAgent cannot start)
? SQLSERVER runs on LocalSystem account with started up type automatic and
successful
? Connect to SQL Analyzer: LocalHost, . (period), (local) and blank all
successful
? Registry key and MDAC are good safe
? BUILTIN\Administrators is present and SYSADMIN rights
? From AD, domain accounts passwords are in synch.
? Win2000, SQL2000 SP3a and build 800.00.760
? Client and network utility used both name pipe and TCP
From enterprise manager on the server itself, I am able to register the
server by supplying the server name. However, when I tried to register with
the (local), I was never able to do so.
I also tried to restart the SQL agent with localsystem, domain and local
admin accounts none of them can start the service. These accounts are local
admin to the box and have complete sysdmin rights to sql server. From query
analyzer, these accounts can connect to server with blank, LocalHost, (local),
and period. So, this tells me that the server does not experience of
resolving (local) connection.
I tried to log on to the server with both local and domain accounts to start
agent but nothing is good for me. I tried to change startup account from
enterprise manager to make sure security is in synch but still the same.
However, the last thing that I?ve not done is reboot the OS.
Please help,
Thanks,
Silaphet,

can't start sql server agent

Using SS2000 SP4. We rebooted our box this morning and the sql server agent
wouldn't start. I found this error in the event viewer in the system errorlog
- " The SQLSERVERAGENT service failed to start due to the following error:
The account name is invalid or does not exist, or the password is invalid
for the account name specified. "
The agent is using the same login and password as the SQL Server service and
the SQL Server service started fine. I trying putting in the password again
from the services app but the hourglass kept going and going until we finally
killed it. I tried changing the startup account to the local system from
within EM but I got this message - "The new service startup account name you
have supplied is invalid or does not exist." I tried using my domain account
and got the same message. I tried going back to the original login and
password and got the same message.
Our sysadmin said he had some problems with our domain controller over the
weekend. Since it can't seem to verify the accounts I thought that might be
related but if so, why does the SQL Server account work ok with the same
login and password?
Any ideas?
Thanks,

Can't shrink system tempdb

The shrink file dialogue box indicates the system tempdb has a current size of

1091MB, and a space used of 19MB. I’m assuming I should be able to reduce the

size to 19MB? Regardless of what shrink action I invoke it still maintains a size

of 1091MB. Is it possible to reduce the size of this system DB? Thanks to everyone

for being there to help.

can't see the sql 2005 box from sql 2000 box

Hey guys. my plans were to setup replicatin for test from sql 2005 to sql
2000. I could see the 2k box from 2005 but not the other way. Is there
something i'm missing or it's not doable? Please let me know. Also, i can't
replicate from 2000 to 2005, right? can i replicate from 2005 to 2000? thank
you very much for your help...
Tejas
Tejas,
this article will explain the compatibility between different versions:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143241.aspx
As for setting up the SQL 2005 subscription to a 2000 publisher, you can set
this up by registering your 2000 publisher in Management Studio.

|||I actually have problems even before doing all this. I can't even register my
2005 box in 2000 SQL EM. I can register the 2000 box in 2005 though. To do
this, I'm using SQL authentication. I have created usernames in both servers.
I dont know if it's doable. Please let me know. Thank you for the article
though.
I will be able to use Transactional(1 way) i assume since my pub/dist is
2000 and sub will be 2005. Please let me know if i understand this crrrectly.
thank you.
|||Tejas,
I probably didn't explain myself clearly - what I was meaning is that you
can register the 2000 SQL Server in SSMS and then create the publication on
the 2000 box using SSMS.

|||Hey Paul. I might be missing something maybe. I'll explain to you what i did.
I registered the 2000 box in SSMS. I created a Trans. publication (1 way)
from there. The publisher and dist side is setup. Now I wanted to add a pull
subscription from 2005 box.
What I did was, I went to the publisher properties on the 2000 box, went to
subscribers and tried to add a subscriber there. I supplied the instance
name, SQL authentication etc. for the 2005 box, but it gives me an error
saying
"SQL Server replication requires the actual server name to make a connection
to the server. Connections through a server alias, IP address, or any other
alternate name are not supported. Specify the actual server name, ''.
(Replication.Utilities)
I can ping my 2005 box but can't see SQL on that box from any 2000 boxes.
They are on different windows domain if that makes any difference for SQL
authentication. Please let me know how i would add this subscriber and
subscribe a 2005 box to a 2000 publication.
thank you, paul

|||Tejas,
I'll just install SQL 2000 on my 2005 Virtual PC then try to repro this.

|||Tejas,
I have no problem registering SQL 2005 as a subscriber on my SQP 2000
Publisher box. In fact, I didn't have to register the server in Enterprise
Manager as a SQL Server - it was automatically picked up. As a variation, I
could also create the subscription directly (including having the subscriber
added as I verified from the generated script) from within SSMS. You might
want to try it that way instead.

|||Hey Paul. I thought it should be that easy. but my EM doesn't pick it up. I
try to register it and it gives me an error saying the server doesn't exist
or access denied. the username i'm trying to use is a sysadmin on the 2005
box. Do i have to check something in Windows or i'm just crazy to not get it
to work? thank you for your time and help, Paul.
|||Tejas,
have a look in the SQL Server Configuration Manager on the 2005 box and
check onn the protocol properties that the instance isn't hidden. Also, on
the 2000 box, you say that pinging the 2005 box works - is this using the IP
address or the netbios name? If the IP address, then I wonder if a full
trust relationship exists between your domains? What happens if you ping the
netbiosname instead? If this doesn't work, then I think you'll need an alias
set up on the publisher for the subscriber, and an entry in the hosts file.
Also I can't tell if you've tried setting up the subscription while using
SSMS - both push and pull would be interesting.

cant see server

Hi,
Twice this has happened....
WinXP Pro SP2. SQL server 2000
When I have used a third party app (.net tool) to select my sql box from the
"available list" it pauses for a while and the drop down list is empty.
I manually type the name of the server in and it goes ahead just fine.
The same happened when I just tried to create a DSN via the MS Access upsize
wizard.

Why can't 3rd parties see the server instance?

JayIf your are using TCP. Sounds like WINS is working but something is
blocking UDP port 1434.

Could be a router, firewall, XP SP2's built in firewall blocks this...

More info...

Looked at network config and it says that named pipes and tcp are the
enabled protocols.
I don't use the XP SP2 firewall. I use Kerio.
I've checked the kerio app settings and SQL is set to "ask" as opposed to
permit or deny (so I'd expect a Kerio dialogue if anything was trying?)
The server installation (in EM) is listed simply as (local).

New DSN and the server drop down box is empty but, get this!, if I type in a
period "." and click next it goes ahead no problem and the connection tests
ok!

CAN'T remove "Execute job" from alert in SS 2005?

This is kind of strange. On a SQL 2005 SP2 box, I've set up a few alerts to
monitor tran log growth. If they reach the threshold the alerts will fire
and send emails and kick off a tran log dump job. Now I want to remove the
job by unchecking the "Execute job" box from the "Response" node. after
clicking OK and going back to revisit it, the job is still checked. I've
tested this on a few other SQL instances - all are the same. From my
machine, I tested on a SQL 2000 server and it works as expected.
The alert is scripted below. I have also tried to change @.job_id to null in
a hope that the sproc will make it unchecked. But still the old job exists
in the alert.
EXEC msdb.dbo.sp_add_alert @.name=N'test',
@.message_id=0,
@.severity=0,
@.enabled=1,
@.delay_between_responses=0,
@.include_event_description_in=1,
@.category_name=N'[Uncategorized]',
@.performance_condition=N'SQLServer:Databases|Log File(s) Used Size
(KB)|tempdb|>|100000',
@.job_id=N'4d9d9fde-0fed-4d79-b894-0a04ae0d2b85'
I tend to believe this is a SQL 2005 bug. Has anyone else seen or can anyone
duplicate the same problem?
RickIt is not strange if it's a bug. :-) confirmed for ss2005. someone already
reported in April 2007.

can't register server

I have SQL Server 2k, sp3a, on a w2k, sp4 box. I'm at home, where I
have no domain. I have two clients, one w2k Pro, sp4, and the other
XP, sp1. I'm using Windows authentication. Neither can register my
server. The error msg is the same for both:
<mysvr> - SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
ConnectionOpen (Connect())
Mind you, the server did show up in the client window, so the client
does seem to know that the server does exist.
Might anyone have an iea as to what I've done wrong? Or haven't done?
Thanks in advance,
Tom
Do you have a firewall running on the box that is hosting SQL Server?
Perhaps it is blocking the connection attempts.

|||Tom hi,
Did you check your client network utility in your clients. Is any record in
there?
You use DHCP or static IP?
Is your name resolution correct?
Are your windows logins in the SQL Server logins?
Check these first

Can''t install sp2 to Express?

Today, I attempted to install sp2 to my SQL 2005 Express instance and the install dialog would not allow me to check the box next to database services. At the bottom of the dialog it says this edition of SQL Server does not qualify for the update. It allowed other parts of the product to be updated, just not the engine.

This is on a Windows XP, SP2 box.

Shouldn't I be allowed to install the update for the database engine?

Thanks,

Del

Are you sure you've downloaded the SP meant for SQL Express? I got mine here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=31711d5d-725c-4afa-9d65-e4465cdff1e7&displaylang=en#Requirements
|||Thanks, Mark. In the past the sp's pretty much applied to all editions. In this case, I did not realize there was a separate download.

Cant insert NULL to DateTime field

Hi I'm using DetailView and I have a text box which show the date. I have formated the date as shortDate {0:d} format. I want to insert/update null if that text box is empty.

I have tried putting null value in my Update statement in sqlDataSource. And I'm getting error saying can't convert varchar to smalldatetime.

If I don't set null value as above, some large date (01/01/2033) has been inserted in my database.

Can anyone help me?

Moe
