can't start sql server agent

Using SS2000 SP4. We rebooted our box this morning and the sql server agent
wouldn't start. I found this error in the event viewer in the system errorlog
- " The SQLSERVERAGENT service failed to start due to the following error:
The account name is invalid or does not exist, or the password is invalid
for the account name specified. "
The agent is using the same login and password as the SQL Server service and
the SQL Server service started fine. I trying putting in the password again
from the services app but the hourglass kept going and going until we finally
killed it. I tried changing the startup account to the local system from
within EM but I got this message - "The new service startup account name you
have supplied is invalid or does not exist." I tried using my domain account
and got the same message. I tried going back to the original login and
password and got the same message.
Our sysadmin said he had some problems with our domain controller over the
weekend. Since it can't seem to verify the accounts I thought that might be
related but if so, why does the SQL Server account work ok with the same
login and password?
Any ideas?

I install SQL server 2000 in Win 2000 server with SQL SP3
and Win 2000 SP4.
The SQL is default instance and use local system as
service startup account.
Currently I change the startup services account from local
system to domain user account.
SQL Server success start but the sql agant no! I don't
know why? I check the error message - it say cannot
connect local server.
Now I change back the sql agent startup agent to local
system but it still can't start!!
Please help cause I need SQL agent!!
ThanksMay be that the BUILTIN\Administrators group was dropped from SQL Server. If
so, recreate it.

should find entries similar to the following:
2003-10-03 20:45:28.95 server SQL server listening on 67.83.16.85: 1058.
2003-10-03 20:45:28.95 server SQL server listening on 127.0.0.1: 1058.
2003-10-03 20:45:32.49 server SQL server listening on TCP, Shared Memory,
Named Pipes.
Also, you may want to log into the SQL Server box with the SQL Agent account
and try osql -S<ServerName> -E from the command line.

server) would be issued if you drop BUILTIN\Administrators from SQL Server
and then try to start SQLServerAgent.
By the way, SQL Server Agent log file SQLAgent.out may contain useful info.

But I remember one situation in which I faced this issue and somebody had
dropped the BUILTIN\Administrators. May be I'm confusing the situations.

Can't replicate with cellular modem.

Using Merge replication.
Publisher is Sql Server 2000 SP4, subscribers are laptops using MSDE SP4.
Using anonymous subscribers that use the SQLMerge object to invoke
replication. Our laptops are everywhere. Some use highspeed internet, some
dialup and some cellular modems.
When using the Aircard (Wireless PC card cellular modem), after 120 seconds
the connection is being dropped. This is happening during the SQL server
initial synchronize process (and perhaps during subsequent merge processes
though they wouldn't likely be more than 120 seconds).
We of course thought it was the Aircard dropping the connection thinking
there was no activity but even when we opened a browser and surfed the
Internet during the synchronization process, it still dropped the connection.
When we simply surfed the Internet (without the synchronize process running)
it never dropped the connection.
Is there a fix? Do I need to have a function going in another thread to fake
a heartbeat to the publisher Sql server from the laptop?

of it to see if the is an auto disconnection after x minutes of inactivity.

|||My client has been working with the phone company on this issue. I am not
working on it directly. However, my understanding is from them that they've
rulled out the settings of the modem being an issue and supposedly the phone
company has had issues with Sql Server before. I was suppose to check on
something called Sql Server latency but that only seems to point to postings
about the time between merge agents which is totally unrelated.

I agree with Hilary. Based on the symptom, it seems to be network issue
related to wireless modem under high load to replication. You may want to
download or copy big files via this network or use special tool from phone
company to check the error code rate.
It is not likely SQL replicaiton will drop the connection because it is
based on higher protocols such as TCP which is not related to modem
directly.

|||Okay, with a bit more experimentation and googling, we think it is the FTP
part of the merge replication that is dieing on us. We tried FTPing directly
and got "the connection with the server was reset". Googling showed that
people said it was because the client was running in passive, not active mode.
Another poster from 2001 said that he discovered that merge repliction FTP's
some files, processes some files and then FTP's some more. Problem with this
is that the server can shut the FTP down.
Does Merge ActiveX use passive FTP? If so, how to work around it? We are
using IIS's FTP server, can the server be set to wait longer?

FTP is used for the snapshot download, both during the initial application
and when the subscription is re-initialized. All other synchronizations use
SQL packets over TCP/IP to transfer data between Publisher and Subscriber.
Did you publish data over Internet? Or did you manually configure
publication to store snapshot via FTP?
You may consider create VPN connection between server/client instead of
using Interent publication.
MergePublication2 control could be used to configruation FTP feature for
snapshot on publisher.
SQL replication can only use active mode FTP. It is not possible to do
passive MODE FTP using SQL replication. The INTERNET_FLAG_PASSIVE has to
be set in FTP connection to do passive mode Ftp. However, this option is
not implemented in SQL replication.
Anyway, it is weird that FTP connection reset could drop WAN connection
because it is higher level ftp protocol based on TCPIP protocols. WAN
connection is based on lower level such as data link layer. You may want to
use different ISP/wireless modem to test this.

can't register server

I have SQL Server 2k, sp3a, on a w2k, sp4 box. I'm at home, where I
have no domain. I have two clients, one w2k Pro, sp4, and the other
XP, sp1. I'm using Windows authentication. Neither can register my
server. The error msg is the same for both:
<mysvr> - SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
ConnectionOpen (Connect())
Mind you, the server did show up in the client window, so the client
does seem to know that the server does exist.
Might anyone have an iea as to what I've done wrong? Or haven't done?

Do you have a firewall running on the box that is hosting SQL Server?
Perhaps it is blocking the connection attempts.

Did you check your client network utility in your clients. Is any record in
there?
You use DHCP or static IP?
Is your name resolution correct?
Are your windows logins in the SQL Server logins?

Can't pass first screen on SQL wizard to create new msde2000A DB

I installed on my Windows2000 server (with SP4) MSDE2000 release A. The
problem is whenever I create a new MS Access Database project, the SQL Server
Database wizard shows up. The first screen asks for information like the name
of the server(SERVER01), the userID (sa) and the password. After I provide
all those information, whenever I click on the Next button, I have the
message box saying:
"Overflow" without any other explanation. I am using MS Office Premium. What
is curious is I create Ms Access .mdb file to import object from the master
DB and I am successfull using the same SA and password that I provided to the
setup program during the installation phase.
Does anybody have any idea why I have the "overflow" message?

Cant make alert job work.

Howdy all. I set up an Alert for deadlocks (# 1205) and have the checkbox
checked to fire off a job when it occurs. I then generate a deadlock, but the
job never gets fired off. Some important fun facts:
1; I ran dbcc traceon with 1204 and 1205 to log deadlocks.
2; I've tried running different jobs manually. They both work.
On the advice I got last week, I have verified that the Event Log service
and SQL Server Agent are both running. Its probably worth noting though that
while I do see the deadlock in the SQL Error Log, it doesnnt show up in the
Event Viewer.
Any ideas?

Messages. Here you search for 1205 and check to write to eventlog. In 2005, you cannot customize
system messages this way, though.

Cant install SP4 on MSDE

I have installed MSDE 1A from the distribution. I have attempted to install
the SP4 MSDE distribution several times, using the SAME setup.ini as the one
I used to install the intance of MSDE in the first place.
I keep getting 'The instance name specified is invalid.'. I have tested
connecting to the instance from Enterprise Manager and from SQL Query
Analyzer without a problem.
Any idea what is going on?

I got a windows XP pro with SQL 2000 SP4 installed. I'm trying to install
Reporting services, it tells me that it requires SP3a and wont let me
continue. I can't uninstall SP4. I installed it a while ago and since it
worked OK did not keep the backed up version of the databases pre-SP4.
Anyone knows how I can get Reporting services installed on this machine?

RS setup looks for a value greater then 8.00.760. It will not allow you to
setup if this value is less. (For some situations we require 8.00.859 or
greater). If you are sure you have SP4 installed then you would first need
to find out why the version number is not correct before you can install RS.

uninstalled SQL and did a reinstall from scratch up to and including Sp3a.

I'm logged in with domain administrator privileges and the domain account
domain.iwam_asp.net has full privileges to this folder. Any idea what I
might need to do now to get this working.
This Win XP pro is part of a small domain. Might this have something to do
with it? The installation went OK this time.

have been given full rights to that folder. I even went in IIS and enabled
anonymous access and I still get same message.
